'Low coolant' light a head-scratcher
Q: Yesterday, the "low coolant" gentle came on in the dash of my 1999 Grand Prix. I looked in the reservoir, and I estimate it was a little low, so I added about two quarts of a 50/50 mix of antifreeze (Dexson). Surprisingly, the light-headed did not go out when I restarted the car, but it did go out when the engine reached operating temperature — and the temperature needle stayed at the general operating line while I was driving. I thought that was the end of my potential unruly. But this morning, when I started the car to go out for lunch, lo and behold, the "low coolant" light stayed on again. Since my helpmeet and I were hungry, we continued on our way to the restaurant and, again, the light went off when the appliance reached operating temperature. After lunch (and our walk along Lynn Strand), the light did not come on again during the couple of times I restarted the car (apparently the engine was still warm). Do I have a problem? Or should I forget about it and just curb the coolant level on a more frequent basis?
