Throgs Neck Bridge reopens to trucks, but delays remain

Fire on the Throgs Neck Bond caused headaches for truckers and commuters, the span reopened to Bronx -booked truck traffic early Saturday morning.

But what traffic reports called morose congestion Saturday afternoon on the northbound Cross Island Parkway in Queens cardinal to the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge suggested the nightmare is not yet over for motorists. The rise from the Cross Island to the Throgs Neck, a major choke mention since the July 10 fire, is not due to open until Aug. 10 and most vehicles plain to be continuing west, where traffic must squeeze into a one-lane right of entry to the Whitestone.

The Whitestone itself also was jammed Bronx-bound Saturday afternoon.

The Throgs Neck fire, which officials have attributed to a construction tradesman's blow torch, was centered in scaffolding and construction materials below the roadway at the Queens end.
