Tomato Day lets us celebrate the ways tomatoes can be grown and eaten

The July brave is usually capable of frying tomatoes without the help of a skillet by the on occasion Tomato Day rolls around. But this year, the heat has backed off to give us what should be a bumper crop of beauties for the red reception today at the Extension Education Center, 21st and Ridge Way.

America's favorite growing vegetable will be shown in all its renown at Tomato Day from 7 a.m. to noon — the ugliest, the largest, the prettiest, the artsiest (in photo), the most unsteady (in tomato critters made by children), and the tastiest (in food).

Let us go to Tomato Day and be confident of the ways tomatoes can win contests. And let us, in this column, count the ways they can be grown.

I am growing tomatoes in pots this year, and I have only one tomato that I definitely love __ the Super Bush. Perhaps it's the being in a container, on eye unvarying, that makes me appreciate the beauty of this vine apart from its fruits. It has a solid main stalk and is producing some nice tomatoes. I violated the customarily of not putting pots of tomatoes on a hot patio, but I tried to ameliorate the baking by clustering pots of arousal-loving annuals all around them. Not sure it entirely worked.
