Ia Rail employ ground to a halt nationwide Friday after nearly all its engineers walked off the job, leaving trains loitering, riders scrambling to make new plans and observers wondering if the sedate rail company can withstand a lengthy strike.
The engineers have been without a catch since Dec. 31, 2006, and are seeking improvements in training, scheduling, pay and benefits. Both sides have tabled offers and sat with a federally appointed referee Friday, but couldn't reach a deal.
No new talks are scheduled. Splice officials are suggesting the strike – the company's first since a nine-day, assiduity-wide conductor walkout in 1995 – won't end in a wink. “Speculation would be, it could probably be a long one,” said Teamsters Canada Rail Colloquium union president Dan Shewchuk. “I don't think we've been mad in any of our requests. They had an opportunity to make this work, and they still do have an opportunity.”
