I'd like to chew out tattle on you the story of how I learned how to do the Valve Lash Clearance Checks on Maria, my 2004 R1150RT. BMW Boxer engines, whether oilheads or airheads, have to have the leave in their valves checked at regular intervals. Insolvency to do so results in a noisy, clickety, and poorly running mechanism and damages your valves. Not a good thing.
So back in May of 2007, my wrenching mentor Mike O came over to on me through this procedure which at the time seemed so mysterious to me.
Back then, as Maria went over 30,000 miles, it was beforehand for the 30k service which includes checking the valve lash clearance. In preparation, I had watched a co-proletarian demonstrate how to do it on his Kawasaki Concours motorcycle. Not exactly the same but the concept of "too sloppy", "too tight", "feels favourable" were what I learned that day.
