Upgrading the Alternator

The modifications covered in two sometime articles (see Chasing Overheating and Chasing Overheating - Again! ) had led me to the in the matter of where I thought I had fixed the overheating problems I was having with my V8 Cobra facsimile.

But doing some further testing of the cooling system indicated that perhaps I had another problem, one of a altogether different sort.

What happened was that while on-road testing, the locomotive cut out on me and wouldn’t start. Voltage testing indicated a extinguished battery. A shortish walk home to pick up a set of jumper leads and a safe large battery and the car was back in business.

Keeping an eye on the voltmeter showed that with the corpulent electric radiator fan running, battery voltage was thriving backwards at an unreasonable rate. This told me that if I was stuck in traffic, the coolant wouldn’t overheat but the battery and apparatus management would die - and so would I, of embarrassment!
