A 100-mph mend of history got star treatment recently when its owners comprehensive its part in the history of racing from Atlantic Beach to Ponte Vedra Margin in the early 1900s.
Torpedo-shapedsingle-seaters such as the Simplex Piston Ring Dearest, with blaring exhausts and skinny tires, once rocketed down the sand, closing in on 200-mph burn rubber records or racing around barrels in what would evolve into oval races on asphalt at places such as Daytona Strand.
The car, which appeared at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance the one-time two years, is on display at the Beaches Museum and History Center at 380 Pablo Ave. in Jacksonville Careen. It may be the lone locally built survivor of those days, said Bill Warner, the Concours designer who co-owns the car.
"It is probably the only surviving barrel racer from the days of the recently '20s and early '30s that were raced on the beaches here in Florida," he said. "... And of the cars that ran at the continuously, it is probably one of the prettiest and was built in Jacksonville."
