Cronkite had Oklahoma ties

But before he became "the most trusted man in America" as the holdfast of the CBS Evening News, he spent time in the Midwest reporting in run off and radio.

Most people don't know he spent time in Norman, enjoying a share as the voice of Sooner football.

At age 20, Cronkite was looking for a job after spending opportunity at the Houston Post. He was offered the position of WKY Radio sportscaster in 1937 and was the flatter-by-play announcer for the season, Kenny Mossman, University of Oklahoma older associate athletics director for communications.

"He didn't last very great, Cronkite didn't, doing sports, but he was looking for a job," said David Dary, who worked at CBS in Washington, D.C., at the same epoch Cronkite worked for CBS in New York. Dary, former director of OU's H.H. Herbert Faction of Journalism, lives in Norman and included Cronkite's bit in Norman in his book, "The Oklahoma Publishing Company's First Century."
