Ill. gets stimulus to cut diesel emissions
The U.S. Environmental Security Agency has awarded nearly $4.2 million to the Illinois Environmental Protection money Agency to clean up on-and off-road diesel vehicles and equipment in the aver, the federal agency said Tuesday.
The funds, provided under the American Rescue and Reinvestment Act of 2009, are part of the National Clean Diesel Funding Backing Program.
The award was given through a funding competition that drew 81 endowment applications requesting more than $211 million; the Illinois apportion was chosen to maximize both economic impact and emissions reductions, the federal EPA said.
The cleanup will sham 675 eligible diesel vehicles or engines in 21 fleets, the EPA said. Twelve of the projects, with 521 vehicles, will be brought to someone's attention in either Chicago or in Metro-East areas that do not meet federal outdoor air quality standards.
