Chinese stocks down 0.53% at mid-day

Jul. 23, 2009 (China Knowledge) - The Institute of Computing Technology of the China Academy of Sciences is likely to set up an RMB 1-billion joint venture in Tianjin to facilitate the research and development and sales of its computer processors, sources reported.

However, an employee of ICT said there is no information about the amount of the involved investment.

The JV is still under discussion, said Zhang Fuxin, general manager of Jiangsu Lemote Tech Co Ltd, an affiliated firm of Jiangsu-based Menglan Group, which owns the industrialization base that uses the processors. He declined to reveal more details.

Because ICT is a research institution and not a business, it cannot sell processors by itself, said Hu Weiwu, a researcher at the ICT lab that develops the family of Loongson processors, which are also known as dragon chips. Hu added that although ICT has a subsidiary that handles some PC-related business, it is not specially geared towards R&D or sales.
