The "January Effect," at least, has a constituent in the market itself, although its success has been somewhat diluted by its own popularity as well as some renowned failures, such as 1987 and 2008. This theory postulates that if the source market rises in January (or during the first two weeks of January, according to a difference), the year will end on a positive note, and conversely the opposite upshot will likely occur if January performance is negative. Since much of the January in point of fact is a result of readjusting portfolios after year-end tax selling, I don't put much dogma in this theory either.
