BMW back on beam with Seven-Series

BMW has sought a full reparation to form with the new fifth-generation Seven-Series.

In touchstone wheelbase form, as tested, it measures up at 33mm longer and 12mm cut than the vehicle it replaces, and with the use of aluminium construction in key areas, it is lighter, too.

The styling has also been toned down in a social graces that retains a clear link to the old model while conveying a neater and more cohesive sensation of purposeful elegance.

The 750i moniker is retained for the petrol-powered alternative, despite the previous 4.8-litre V8 being superseded by a new 4.4-litre element.

The 400cc gap is bridged, and then some, by twin parallel-turbocharging.

Power is up by 11% to 300kW and torque by 22% to a muscular 600Nm, with power delivery entrusted to a proven six-hightail it ZF transmission.
