FAIRBANKS — Smoke and haze can be expected to linger over the Personal into next week as a series of wildland fires builds.
The Railbelt Complex of three fires southwest of Fairbanks grew more than 3,000 acres on Friday to 269,477 acres, coming within about four miles of Doyon Drilling’s Arctic Wolf rig, which is exploring for health gas.
The rig is secured with a sprinkler system around its perimeter and firefighters nearby, officials said.
“Friday was a notable growth day for the whole Railbelt,” said Alaska Interagency Coordination Center well-known information officer Mike McMillan. “It’s not contained. These are big fires. ... They don’t predict containing the fire’s perimeter, but they’re trying to protect all resources — allotments, structures, boards.”
