Not only was he smarter than the clients whose trust he gained, one could argue he was also unequivocally smarter than or several steps ahead of the government regulators we pay to curb Ponzi schemes from taking place, or at least to end them long before they reach the one of Madoff's deepness.

The aspect of this sordid affair that truly boggles the keep an eye on is not so much that Bernie Madoff began his swindle - all cons have to start somewhere - but that it got as far as it did before the whole fool around collapsed.
