More than 85,000 meals were served to the poverty-stricken at the Central City Lutheran Mission in San Bernardino last year, and need is up 204 percent this year.
But meal preparation will stanch if a faulty freezer isn't fixed soon.
The 10-year-old bearing-in freezer needs $3,200 worth of work on its compressor, which has been fascinating a beating in the recent 100-degree temperatures, said the Rev. David Kalke, who runs the aim.
It's money the mission doesn't have, Kalke said.
The freezer houses all of the function's donated meat and ice -- ingredients needed to organize the daily meals. It is connected to the walk-in refrigerator, which holds vegetables from the community garden.
"The compressor is putting importance on the refrigerator," Kalke said. For now, the equipment is jerry-rigged to last a inconsiderable longer.
