Mets put Sheffield on DL

The New York Mets placed outfielder Gary Sheffield on the 15-day ruined list Saturday with a strained right hamstring. He was placed on the DL retroactive July 18. The 40-year-old Sheffield leads the gang with 10 home runs and is batting .286 with 36 RBI in 75 games. He was signed even-handed before the start of the season after getting cut by Detroit.

The Chicago Cubs placed left-hander Ted Lilly on the 15-day harmed list Saturday because of inflammation in his pitching shoulder. Lilly, who's 9-7 with a 3.59 ERA, also expects to have arthroscopic surgery on his liberal knee Monday to repair an injury he believes is separate to the shoulder problem. The Cubs hope their lone All-Leading man will only miss four or five starts and return in mid-August.
