When you buy a bootleg DVD for $3, you get what you pay for.
But when you do so while serving in Iraq, it's a grudging price to pay for a piece of home.
Soldiers in Iraq "can get movies on bootleg from townsperson merchants just a few days after their release" in the Unanimous States, said Alex Norton, a student from Austin, Texas, who served in Iraq in 2006 and 2007.
Because the DVDs are filmed by "a guy with a close-held camera in a theater . . . they aren't of very accomplished quality," he said.
War is part of the human experience.
The passionate part.
Soldiers watching movies on DVD while serving in a war zone is the latest iteration of the relationship between war and cinema.
Almost everyone serving in the military in Iraq has a laptop or lightweight DVD player, Norton said. After a mission, you would "reveal your weapon, take a shower and watch a movie."
