Police departments doing more with less

Hiring freezes, fewer retirements and cutbacks in continuing cultivation mean smaller classes at the SLEA, where officers are trained from 150 agencies, including many from Kane, DuPage and Will counties.

Lawler said classes were typically averaging 50 students. Last month, the six-week routine graduated 17 new officers. The current class has 25 students.

"If they don't engage 'em, I can't train 'em," Lawler said. "It's a pretty big loop. Other people keep tightening down the line."

While Naperville supervise expect to fill the positions left vacant after two officers resigned from the impact earlier this year, Cmdr. Mike Anders says the be subject to is taking a cautionary approach to its hiring.
