X-Ray Vision: The once and future knees

Football mellow is starting and we should see the return of two defensive superstars who missed last year: the Giants ’ Osi Umenyiora and the Chargers ’ Shawn Merriman . Interestingly, their two knee injuries and their treatment highlighted some of the crafty issues that professional athletes and their physicians must deal with.

As Umenyiora was upsetting to turn the corner against the Jets , it looked as if his foot got stuck in the dismiss. Initial positive postgame comments led us to believe there was no ligament devastation to his knee. However, Osi would be out for the season with a meniscal tear.

As we explained last week with Met ace Johan Santana ’s maltreatment at the end of 2008, the meniscus is a fibrocartilage, wedge-shaped reduce between the two main bones of the leg: the femur (or thigh bone) and the tibia (or shin bone). It helps stabilize the cooperative and protect the cartilage.
