The rising wide-ranging price of nutrients – or fertilizer — is weighing heavily on the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program (FWCP) and the B.C. Sacred calling of Environment (MOE), joint co-ordinators of the Arrow Lakes Reservoir Nutrient Restoration Program.
The price of purchasing nutrients for this successful restoration effort, which is also supported by the Arrow Lakes Power Corporation, has skyrocketed in latest years.
Since the Arrow Lakes Reservoir Nutrient Restoration Program started in 1999 nutrient prices had typically risen by an undistinguished of less than 1 per cent each year. This changed dramatically in 2007 when prices increased by all but 30 per cent followed by another double digit proliferating last year.
“While prices have levelled off for now, the roller-coaster costs are not expected to end anytime in a second,” said Kevin Conlin, co-chair of the FWCP Steering Commission.
