"Who's Sam?" I asked when I first noticed the slowly fading scars that formed the name on my partner Luke's arm.

"Just some girl," he said quietly, tracing the letters with his against and avoiding eye contact, although we were sitting next to each other on the couch.

He hadn't seen her in years, or heard from her, or intelligence about her -- even though her name stares up at him daily. Sam is merely a memory, someone Luke would like to leave behind if his body would let him.

"I have no idea why I did it," he said embarrassed, recalling the ceaselessly he took a knife and etched the letters into his skin; letters that will leftovers part of him forever. "I was just upset and that was my release."

"Your release was carving her name in your arm?" I spouted back at Luke, flabbergasted.
