Watch out: illuminated headlights are no guarantee rear lights are lit
UESTION: My partner was rear-ended the other day in her brand-new car. The other driver is disputing that he was at hold someone responsible, claiming she did not have her lights on - and he has a witness, a pedestrian at the scene, who backs that up. She says she certainly did.
Is there any way all of the tail lights could have been burned out in a two-week-old car? There is no way of effective now that the rear is all bashed in.

ANSWER: It's highly unseemly that the tail lights could have been all burned out.
I suggest the tail lights were not on - and believe your woman thought they were. The problem lies with the way some manufacturers - including several of the largest - are dealing with the dispute of mandatory daytime running lights.
The car-makers afford the mandatory visible lights at the front of the vehicle by tapping into the conveyance wiring in such a way as to connect to the instrument panel lighting.
