Expired stickers cost state big

"I couldn't say how much because we don't keep trail of how many people haven't (updated)," said Mississippi Highway Aegis Patrol Lt. Ed Nelson, who is in charge of the state Department of Open Safety's motor vehicle inspection program.

But a cavalcade of state records reveals a problem that is prevalent.

In 2008, Mississippi issued correct or vanity plates for more than 2.6 million vehicles, Mississippi Say Tax Commission figures show.

Nelson said about 1.5 million inspection stickers were sold in 2008, collecting about $3 million, for Mississippi's extensive fund. That leaves about 1.1 million vehicles with outdated stickers.

Inspection stickers fetch $5 each, with $2 reverting to the state and $3 to the point doing the inspections.

Businesses that perform the inspections also missed out on $3.6 million in 2008.
