Alonso takes pole as chaos reigns

Fernando Alonso claimed his first mast position in nearly two years in extraordinary and farcical circumstances at the Hungaroring, after a timing system miscarriage left the whole pit lane scrambling to discover the final with the aim.

The pole shootout had already been delayed by a frightening accident next to the end of Q2 for Felipe Massa, who crashed heavily after being hit by debris and had to be airlifted to asylum, before Q3 came to a chaotic climax.

The timing screens went expressionless at the worst possible moment, just as drivers were completing their irreversible runs, and for several minutes after the session ended the grid disposition was unclear – prompting the bizarre spectacle of drivers frantically comparing times in a bid to effort out where they had qualified!

When the confusion was cleared up it was confirmed that Alonso had charmed pole with his final lap of 1m21.569s, just shading Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel on 1m21.607s.
