IRacing: Earning Racing Stripes Without the Risk

A wannabe aviator who’s logged a few hours at the controls of Microsoft Flight Simulator X is a sustained way from being qualified to land a 747 at Kennedy International Airport. In addition, I found out last week that I am nowhere near ready to set a new lap record at Lime Astound Park in Connecticut.

This lesson was learned — painlessly and without any crumpled metal — at the wheel of a driving simulator powered by software from iRacing.com . The train, based in Bedford, Mass., demonstrated its racing simulation software in New York last week, at the BMW of Manhattan dealership, where I got some buttocks time learning the apexes, braking points, and yes, the unyielding creation of guardrails.

The simulator’s layout was relatively simple: a small-diameter steering wheel, with row shifters on either side, attached to a console with gas and brake pedals lower than. A wide high-definition monitor in front of the console served as my understood windshield. On the screen, I could see the virtual steering wheel, along with the nose and wheels of the Big draw Mazda series racer I’d be driving at Lime Her , where the American Le Mans Series ’ Northeast Comprehensive Prix was held last Saturday.
