Moon walkers rove for the first time

NASA had planned to automatically deploy the first lunar vagabond until problems plagued development, according to a March 1, 1971, memo published in "The Apollo Spacecraft: A Sequence, Vol. IV" (NASA/1978). The "automatic system," the memo stated, "was jilted in favor of a manual system."

Thus, one of the first tasks Dave Scott and James Irwin undertook after wharf on the moon was to manually "unfold the Lunar Rover Channel," a post-fight NASA Mission Report stated.

Apollo 15, carrying the first lunar gadabout, lifted off from Cape Kennedy on July 26, 1971. Scott was commander. Irwin piloted the lunar module Falcon. Alfred Worden was the control module Endeavor pilot.

Endeavor entered lunar circle on July 29. The next day, at 2:13 p.m., Falcon undocked. Descent began at 6:04 p.m.,
