WATSONVILLE --" The 12th event of the Mike Cecil Memorial race was well worth the charge of admission as Jim Pettit II and Bobby Hogge IV brought fans to their feet with rip-roaring side-by-side racing in the twin 25-lap feature race Friday incessantly at Ocean Speedway.
Due to car set-up problems, Hogge and Pettit both had to dog-races their way through the "B" main event to make the feature race.
Pettit edged Hogge for the win on the conclusive lap to claim his first win in the 50-lap race honoring a great native competitor. Cecil, a Watsonville native, lost his subsistence to cancer in 1997. A champion of the Street Stock separation in 1995, Cecil moved into modifieds the season latest to his death.
"I'm very proud to be a winner of the Mike Cecil sprint," Pettit said. "I've know the family my whole racing pursuit and it's an honor to be here at our home track. Honoring Mike is putting on the rout show for the fans we can and tonight we definitely did that."
