Microsoft's awful Q4: will Windows 7 save the day?

From a specialized and financial perspective, Microsoft is heading for more troubled waters of its own making. The seed issue is total cost of ownership (TCO). The primary producer is driver upgrades.

Vista failed in the marketplace for at least three complex reasons: poor driver support from peripheral mat manufacturers, instability in the Vista operating system, and the existence of the master operating system Microsoft ever offered in its entire history (XP Pro). Kind 7 may also fail for the same technical reasons. Here is why I believe so.

Microsoft is changing its driver requirements again with Idea 7. Computer and peripheral manufacturers must offer and support XP, Vista, and V7 drivers for installed users of their gear at their own expense. Microsoft's answer to its so-called "backward compatibility" quality is a virtual PC running two operating systems: V7 and XP Pro. How many legacy (be familiar with that old and clunky) PCs have the capacity to run two OS versions within a virtual environment? How many irrelevant and motherboard manufacturers are willing to invest their money to scribble V7 drivers for equipment that is no longer in production and out of warranty?
